ADHD: Support for Attention and Impulsivity Struggles
Understanding ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), previously known as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), is now classified into three presentations: hyperactivity, inattentiveness, or a combination of both.
Children with ADHD may face challenges with inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, or emotional regulation. They may:
-
- Exhibit symptoms of inattention (attention deficit) only
- Show symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity only
- Have a combination of inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms
Identifying ADHD in Your Child
No single test can diagnose ADHD. Although your child may display symptoms consistent with ADHD, a comprehensive assessment is essential. This may involve (with parental consent) your psychologist working closely with your child’s school, paediatrician, and/or GP.
If your child struggles with attention, concentration, or impulsivity, causing issues at home or school, early intervention can make a significant difference. Research shows that children with ADHD often face criticism despite their efforts, which can impact their self-esteem. Effective treatment can help your child develop lifelong skills to thrive and can improve the parent-child relationship by helping parents understand their child’s challenges.
Flexible, Comprehensive, and Individually Tailored ADHD Assessments
We understand that one size does not fit all.
Our assessments are comprehensive, but we recognise that families seek evaluations for various reasons. While we adhere to industry gold standards, we ensure that our approach is flexible and tailored to your needs. We avoid unnecessary extensive reports or tests unless required.
For general treatment, we offer screening and provisional diagnosis based on clinical observations. This allows us to begin treatment promptly and provide support.
When a formal diagnosis is necessary, we conduct a gold standard assessment to determine if your child meets the diagnostic criteria. This includes a detailed report that can be shared with your child’s paediatrician.
Following the initial assessment, we will discuss the specific testing needed and how it can be most beneficial for your situation.
