Mary Rizk
Sand Play & Expressive Therapist
My professional journey
My journey began in Egypt and Dubai, where I spent many rewarding years as a teacher and senior teacher, helping children grow both academically and personally. Seeking new opportunities and experiences for my family, we made the life-changing decision to move to Australia. This transition deepened my understanding of resilience and adaptability—qualities I now aim to nurture in the children and families I work with.
After arriving on a working visa, I became deeply aware of the challenges children face when navigating change, uncertainty, and the pressures of adjusting to new environments. Inspired by these experiences, I pursued advanced studies in counselling, focusing on child development, parenting strategies, abuse counselling, and therapeutic approaches to support children through their unique challenges.
My work integrates my counselling expertise with psychology studies at JCU, allowing me to confidently implement evidence-based strategies that empower children and their families. A key element of my practice is sandplay therapy. This creative and non-judgmental approach provides children with a safe outlet to process emotions, build resilience, and foster self-expression.
Over the years, I’ve worked closely with children and families, equipping them with the tools to face life’s challenges with strength and confidence. My commitment is to create a nurturing, supportive environment where every child feels valued and empowered, helping families build brighter, more hopeful futures—together.
