Rebecca Blackwood

Clinical Psychologist

Rebecca is a Clinical Psychologist with more than fifteen years of experience supporting individuals, couples, children, and families across community, hospital, and private practice settings. At the heart of her work is a genuine curiosity about people, relationships, and the factors that help individuals and families thrive.

Rebecca is known for her warm, grounded, and compassionate approach. She believes that one of the most important ingredients in therapy is the therapeutic relationship itself. Meaningful change often begins when people feel safe, understood, and accepted.

Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, Rebecca takes the time to understand each person’s unique story and the broader factors that may be influencing their wellbeing. Working collaboratively with her clients, she develops a shared understanding of the challenges they are facing and identifies practical ways forward. This thoughtful and holistic approach helps guide treatment in a way that is both meaningful and relevant to each person’s life.

Rebecca draws on evidence-based therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Schema Therapy, tailoring her approach to meet the individual needs, strengths, and goals of each client.

My professional journey

Originally from Sydney, I moved to Cairns more than seventeen years ago in search of a slower and more sustainable lifestyle, and quickly fell in love with the region’s natural beauty and sense of community. Cairns is now proudly home, where I live with my husband, two teenage children, and our much-loved Groodle.

Before becoming a psychologist, I worked as a solicitor. While I enjoyed the challenge of law, I found myself increasingly drawn to understanding people’s stories, relationships, and the ways we navigate life’s challenges. This led me to undertake postgraduate studies in counselling and psychology and ultimately to a career that I find hugely rewarding.

Over the years, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families across a range of settings and life stages. I have a particular interest in grief and loss, anxiety, mood disorders, relationship difficulties, and supporting people through the perinatal period.

I have also enjoyed providing clinical supervision to counsellors, social workers, and psychologists, supporting practitioners to reflect on their work, strengthen their skills, and discover fresh perspectives in their clinical practice.

I understand that life can sometimes feel overwhelming, challenging, and lonely. Different stages of life bring different struggles. My passion is helping people better understand themselves, recognise unhelpful patterns, strengthen their relationships, and build the skills and confidence needed to live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

You don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone. It would be a privilege to be part of your village.
